Early Orthodontics and Invisalign

It almost seems like braces are a rite of passage in the teen years, but did you know that by having early orthodontic evaluation and treatment at a younger age, we may be able to prevent or reduce the need for braces?

Early Orthodontic Intervention

Children grow so quickly! As they start to acquire more adult teeth, we can begin to see any challenges that may arise. The American Association of Orthodontics recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by the age of seven. Because children’s bones are still growing, this is an excellent time to provide early treatment, if necessary.

Some common growth patterns that we can address with early orthodontic intervention include:

  • Overcrowding
  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crossbite
  • Malocclusion (poor bite)
  • Overlapping teeth

When we diagnose conditions during growth, we can more easily guide the direction of growth to create a healthier bite and better alignment.

Early Orthodontic Treatment Options

Some of the treatment options to protect your child’s smile include:

Space maintainers –  If your child loses a baby tooth prematurely, we can “reserve” a spot for their permanent tooth to erupt by placing a space maintainer. This keeps their remaining teeth from drifting and causing the permanent tooth to erupt in the wrong location.

Palatal expander – When we predict that the upper or lower jaw may not provide sufficient room for your child’s permanent teeth, we can use an expander to guide bone growth and make space, avoiding overcrowding and overlapping.

Traditional braces – In many cases, having braces early can solve a host of orthodontic issues. From guiding growing teeth to the correct location to correcting a protruding bite or helping teeth to erupt (when they occasionally get stuck), we can save treatment time and money later by addressing those symptoms early.

Benefits of Early Orthodontic Treatment

Because bone moves more easily while it is still growing, early orthodontics offers many benefits:

  • Saves treatment time
  • Often saves money
  • Improves child’s self confidence
  • May eliminate the need for treatment during teen years
  • Is often more comfortable
  • Can provide better results
  • Creates beautiful smiles

Even if your child does not relish the idea of wearing a palatal expander while they are young, when he or she becomes a teenager, they will thank you!

If your child is already a patient in our Southington, CT dental office, we will already be keeping a close eye on their growth and development. If you are a parent looking to have an early orthodontic evaluation for your child, Dr. Jay Leung looks forward to welcoming you.

Invisalign Clear Braces

At The Little Tooth Company, having a number of options for patients is important because every patient is different! Invisalign uses a series of clear, plastic aligners to gradually move teeth into alignment. Because Invisalign is smooth, your child can avoid the soreness inside their cheeks that is common with traditional braces. Invisalign also makes oral hygiene much easier because they can be removed to clean and floss your child's teeth.

To learn if Invisalign is right for your child, give us a call and schedule an orthodontic evaluation.
