Kids love sweet treats, juice, and chewy snacks, but those are not great for their teeth! At The Little Tooth Company, we do our best to help your child avoid cavities by providing advice, professional cleanings, and preventive treatments such as fillings and sealants.
If your child does develop decay, don’t worry! Dr. Jay is gentle and can make the experience anxiety and pain-free for your child.
What Causes Decay?
If you left it up to the news media, they would have you think that if you keep candy away from your child, they will never develop a cavity. This is not the case!
Decay, also known as dental caries, develops from the acid found in food and drinks and is created by bacteria in their mouths. We know what you are thinking – “yuck! Bacteria?" Absolutely! Mouths are prone to collecting bacteria, and those bacteria love to feast on sugary or starchy foods. As bacteria multiply, they create an acidic environment in the mouth. Acid softens the protective enamel that covers teeth, and decay begins.
Acidic drinks have been found to be especially damaging. Soda, sports drinks, juice, and energy drinks are often filled with sugar and are already acidic, creating a double whammy for teeth. Because kids' teeth are still growing and have deep grooves, they can be particularly susceptible to this troublesome condition.
Fillings to Protect Teeth
We offer BPA-free, esthetic tooth-colored fillings that require us to remove less of your child's healthy tooth structure than the older amalgam fillings.
Once decay enters a tooth, it will continue to spread over time until we treat it. At The Little Tooth Company, we make the restoration process easy for kids.
Dr. Jay takes comfort seriously, and that is why his emphasis on prevention and early detection is key. When we diagnose decay, we will treat it quickly while it is still small and manageable.
Not every filling requires anesthetic. If your child has a small amount of surface decay, we can treat it quickly and painlessly. The closer decay comes to the nerve, the more likely we are to need anesthetic. Dr. Jay has a trick up his sleeve when it comes to administering anesthetic:
First, he will explain the procedure to your child. The unknown is always scarier than the truth. We use non-threatening terms your child will understand but will not create anxiety, and we demonstrate what we will do on a large model of a tooth.
Next, Dr. Jay will numb the area using a unique pharmacy-compounded, topical numbing gel (using four types of anesthetic) before administering an injection. It is a much stronger anesthetic than what most dental offices use. Most kids will not even feel it. He will only begin treatment when your child’s tooth is “asleep.”
Why Save Baby Teeth?
You may think of baby teeth (primary teeth) as disposable because they will just fall out anyway. Primary teeth, however, provide essential guidance for your child’s permanent teeth. Without them, your child may develop alignment issues.
